1986 Gold Proof Three Coin Sovereign Set Queen Elizabeth II Commonwealth Games

The 1986 Gold Proof Three Coin Sovereign Set was issued by The Royal Mint and brings together three important British gold coins from the reign of Queen Elizabeth II. Struck in 22 carat gold to Proof standard, the set comprises the 1986 Commonwealth Games £2 Double Sovereign, Full Sovereign and Half Sovereign. The centrepiece of the set is the 1986 Commonwealth Games £2, notable as the first commemorative £2 coin issued by The Royal Mint, more than a decade before the denomination entered general circulation in its modern bi-metallic form.

Its reverse commemorates the XIII Commonwealth Games, held in Edinburgh, Scotland, in 1986. The Full and Half Sovereigns feature Benedetto Pistrucci's iconic St George and the Dragon design, a motif closely associated with the modern Sovereign since its introduction in 1817. The obverse of all three coins carries Raphael Maklouf's portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, introduced on British coinage in 1985.

A total of 12,500 three coin sets were issued by The Royal Mint, with this being the only Sovereign set offered for 1986. Combining the historic first commemorative £2 with two traditional Sovereign denominations, the set represents a distinctive issue from the Elizabeth II era. This example is presented in its original Royal Mint red presentation case with numbered Certificate of Authenticity, with all three coins retained in their original clear capsules.
